US 101 from I-880 to SR 85 in south San Jose
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Silicon Valley Express Lanes Program has deployed express lanes throughout Santa Clara County, including on State Route 237 (SR 237), Interstate 880 (I-880), the I-880/SR 237 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Direct Connectors in Milpitas, SR-85, US 101 and the US 101/SR 85 HOV Direct Connectors in Mountain View and San Jose. VTA is implementing the program in phases based on funding availability.
Phases 1 and 2 implemented express lanes on SR 237 by converting existing HOV lanes from the Santa Clara/Alameda Countyline on I-880 through the I-880/SR 237 interchange to Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale, including the I-880/SR 237 HOV Direct Connector. Phase 3 implemented express lanes on US 101 from the Santa Clara/San Mateo Countyline in Palo Alto to approximately SR 237, including the US 101/SR 85 HOV Direct Connector in Mountain View. The ongoing Phase 4 project is constructing express lanes on SR 85 from SR 87 to the US 101/SR 85 interchange in south San Jose, including on the SR 85/US 101 HOV Direct Connector.
The Phase 5 project is extending express lanes southward on US 101 from the already operating segment by converting the existing HOV lane to express lane operations and by adding a second express lane in both directions from Fair Oaks Avenue in Sunnyvale to approximately the US 101/I-880 interchange in San Jose.
Phase 6 would continue express lanes even further south on US 101 by converting the existing HOV lanes to express lane operations and by adding a second express lane in both directions from approximately the US 101/I-880 interchange to the US 101/SR 85 interchange in south San Jose.
The Phase 6 project on US 101 would:
1. Convert the existing single HOV lanes to express lanes in both directions on US 101 from approximately I-880 to the US 101/SR 85 interchange in south San Jose.
2. Add a second express lane in both directions on US 101 from approximately I-880 to the US 101/SR 85 interchange in south San Jose.
3. Widen existing bridge structures to accommodate the second express lane.
4. Modify existing on- and off-ramps.
Express Lanes Benefits:
• Results in more efficient use of the existing roadway.
• Provides a new, reliable travel option.
• Safety enhancements including taller median barrier to
reduce headlight glare, additional lighting, and enhanced
visibility pavement delineation and markings.
• Provides a new revenue stream for transportation,
including for public transit.
