Lawrence Expressway Grade Separation Project

Overview

The Lawrence Expressway Grade Separation Project is a mobility improvement effort led by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the cities of Santa Clara and Sunnyvale.

The project focuses on Lawrence Expressway between US 101 and El Camino Real, including the Homestead Road area. Lawrence Expressway is a key north-south corridor serving Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and San José. It experiences vehicle congestion and delays, and provides limited accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists with outdated multimodal designs.

The project is currently in the Project Validation Document phase, which will evaluate potential improvements and define next steps.

Project Purpose and Objectives

  • Reduce congestion and delays along Lawrence Expressway
  • Improve east-west mobility and local access
  • Enhance safety for all users
  • Improve bicycle and pedestrian accommodation and connectivity

Project Features:

The Project Validation Document phase will evaluate potential improvements, including:

  • Grade separation at key intersections (e.g., Arques, Kifer, Reed/Monroe)
  • Improvements near Homestead Road
  • Bicycle and pedestrian enhancements
  • Operational improvements to optimize traffic flow

Final improvements will be determined in future phases based on technical analysis, environmental review, stakeholder input, and funding.
