Each September the Bay Area comes together to celebrate Transit Month with interactive events, giveaways, educational opportunities, and more to bring awareness and excitement to the region’s public transportation.

The best way to participate in Transit Month is to follow the Bay Area’s Transit Month event calendar. Featuring events from nine Bay Area counties, the calendar is the best place to keep up to date with everything Transit Month. 

Featured Events:

• Transit Month Ride Contest | Track your rides to earn badges, win prizes, compete against friends, and show your love for transit!
• 9/15 All Aboard Transit Day | Join VTA in celebrating All Aboard Transit Day! VTA Marketing staff will be moving throughout the system handing out swag and interacting with riders.
• 9/15 VTA Free Fare Day | VTA is saying thank you to riders by offering free bus and light rail service Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026. 
• Nominate Your Transit Hero of 2026! | San Francisco Transit Riders and Seamless Bay Area are looking for YOU to nominate people or projects that have made life better for transit riders in the past year.

“Why is Public Transportation Important to You?” Campaign

VTA’s “Why is Public Transportation Important to You?” campaign launches during Transit Month and runs through the end of the year. This campaign will feature print and digital materials featuring the "whys" of Santa Clara County riders as a way to share the importance of public transportation in our region. Keep an eye on VTA’s social media accounts to stay up to date on this campaign.
