Proposed Improvements for Calaveras Boulevard in Milpitas

Traffic operations in the City of Milpitas at the Calaveras Boulevard on-ramp near the McCarthy Boulevard intersection are running more smoothly after VTA completed several improvements last year. The work included installing a new ramp metering signal to accommodate two general-purpose lanes and one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane at the Calaveras Boulevard on-ramp, along with signing and striping changes on westbound Calaveras Boulevard near the McCarthy Boulevard intersection and other improvements to reduce congestion and enhance traffic operations in the area.

Now VTA is at it again with a new project, in partnership with the City of Milpitas and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), to modify State Route 237 (Calaveras Boulevard) between Abel Street and Milpitas Boulevard.

To improve pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicle travel — and remove the existing bottleneck on Calaveras Boulevard — the project proposes widening Calaveras Boulevard between Abel Street and Milpitas Boulevard and adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities in both eastbound and westbound directions. Additionally, the project proposes implementing Complete Streets improvements on Calaveras Boulevard and replacing the existing structures over the Union Pacific Railroad/Bay Area Rapid Transit track, as well as over North Main Street and the Union Pacific Railroad track.

More information about the project, including opportunities for community input, will be shared as planning continues. Stay involved and sign up for updates on the Calaveras Boulevard Improvements Project page.
